Standardized Antibiotic Regimen
For patients with sub-clinical or minimal evidence of endodontic infection:
- Amoxicillin 875mg disp: (10), sig: BID until gone (or)
- ‘Z-Pak#1’ as directed (for patients with a known penicillin allergy).
In more acutely symptomatic clinical situations involving moderate to severe discomfort either with or without swelling related to endodontic infection:
- Augmentin 875mg disp: (20), sig: BID until gone followed by and/or with Flagyl (Metronidazole) 500mg disp: (21), sig: TID until gone (or)
- Clindamycin 300mg disp: (21), sig: TID until gone (for patients with a known penicillin allergy) followed by (per symptom resolution) ‘Z-Pak#1’ as directed.
Antibiotic prophylaxis to minimize/prevent Infective Endocarditis:
- Amoxicillin 2.0g one hour prior to dental procedure (or)
- Azithromycin 500mg one hour prior to dental procedure (for patients with a known penicillin allergy)
Antibiotic prophylaxis to minimize/prevent bacterial infection of Joint Prosthesis:
- Keflex (Cephalexin) 2.0g one hour prior to dental procedure (or)
- Azithromycin 500mg one hour prior to dental procedure (for patients with a known penicillin allergy).
